Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sara Phillips, owner of Superior Performance Coaching, located in Clayton, NC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a small business coach who specializes in taking the f-bomb out of a business owner's day. By f-bomb, of course, I mean frustration. I work with those business owners who have had a moderate amount of success and want to take it to the next level, but they can't seem to keep all the plates spinning at once to get it done, so their business system can't grow. I support them by helping them in 3 specific areas: sales, communication, and leadership. Using planning, knowledge, and strategy, they are able to understand how they can have it all.
Tell us about yourself
I was blessed to be raised in a family where my parents owned their own businesses. I had the opportunity to watch how they grew from a tiny convenience store to a supermarket and everything in between. As a result, I grew up and owned many businesses myself. Seeing small business owners struggle pulls at my heartstrings because I have lived the struggle. By using the information they provide and the latest technology, I am able to support them by putting systems and processes in place that allow them to work on their business, not just in it. This is the only way to take a business to the next level.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment in business is the success of my clients. That is and will always be true. I get totally lit up when I see my community crushing goals and setting the standard for their industry by using great systems and information to transform their business. Having a team member win at their business by using their expertise is what I live for!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The biggest challenge for us all is the same, in my opinion seeing things objectively. When you are the fish, you can't see the water. That is the reason I have a coach. We need someone who can see us objectively and point out the things that we are unable to see because we are emotionally attached. We need someone to show us that the system or process we are using isn't a good fit. It understands that we get to have support and don't have to carry all the weight by ourselves. When we share the load, it allows us freedom to work in our zone of genius so we can have huge wins and create freedom.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The first one is evident in my last response. Be sure to hire a coach and not just any coach. Find one that fits who you are and what you do.
Second, be prepared to be uncomfortable. At any time, understand that being comfortable got you where you are today. If you want more, you will have to be uncomfortable.
Finally, don't wait until you can afford something to do it. Business involves investment and risk. It's part of the package. You don't wait until you have money to advertise. The money comes because of advertising. Make sure you are not putting the cart before the horse. Remember to keep focused on the Big Picture of where you are going.
