Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sara Niblock, founder of Sara Niblock Training, located in Whistler, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sara Niblock Training's Mountain Mom Strong (MMS) program is a rehabilitative approach to postpartum fitness training. The first of its kind in the postpartum space. The program begins with correcting the dysfunction that results from pregnancy and birth. Next, it builds a solid foundation, then focuses on connecting with the body and building strength. Often in the process, mothers are able to heal old injuries, avoid future injuries and find themselves even stronger than they were before pregnancy.

Mountain Mom Strong is a 12-week coach, a virtual program that educates and empowers mothers to take charge of their postpartum journey to recovery. The program grants clients access to an online portal filled with education, instructional videos, a meditation library, and easy-to-follow workout videos. Clients follow a weekly progressive schedule by participating in live classes and regular one-on-one check-ins. The individualized component creates accountability, addresses any challenges with a client's movement pattern, and ultimately gives the program a unique feel tailored to each client's needs. There is also an option to complete a self-paced course for those back at work or unable to commit to a schedule.

Tell us about yourself

New moms are left to navigate their new postpartum body, often struggling with postural changes, incontinence, back, hip, and neck pain. They believe this is their new norm and the price to pay for having a baby. There is so much information available about newborn care but very little about caring for mothers in the postpartum period. This often leads moms to return to fitness too quickly, resulting in injury, increased stress, anxiety, and even depression.

After my son was born, I noticed just how many moms this affected, and I knew I needed to do something about it. As a Kinesiologist and Exercise Physiologist, my standards are high. I couldn't find a program to refer these friends to, so I created my own.

The moms where I live are super active and value their time in the mountains. The ability to play in the mountains hugely affects their physical and mental health. I've seen so many moms fail to return to sport with success, and they think they are broken, but really they never received the support they needed from the beginning. I couldn't sit back and watch this happen anymore. I felt it was my calling to help these moms.

The end result of this program is not only physical strength but new-found confidence and improved mental health, which is what motivates me every day. All women deserve to get back to all the activities they love, pain & symptom-free, and I can help them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is creating and organizing an annual online summit called The AMPP Summit, an acronym for Active Mammas Pregnancy Postpartum. The summit covers the mental, physical and social challenges facing women on their journey to becoming mothers. A vital element of the AMPP Summit is raising awareness of local resources and support that is readily available. Moms get to listen to the best and brightest in the postpartum and prenatal space as they facilitate a free collection of seminars, workshops, and workouts.

Last year we brought over 250 new and expectant mothers together who benefited from three days of free talks, workshops, and seminars. Moms were educated and empowered to take charge of their pregnancy and postpartum journey.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part is setting boundaries and specific times to work on your business. Otherwise, you might find yourself working on it 24/7 and end up with burnout.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find something that you are truly passionate about. You will be spending a ton of time working on it, and if its something you love and are passionate about, you will feel excited and look forward to it, and it won't feel like work. Passion will keep you motivated when challenges arise.
  2. Recognize your strengths and weaknesses and hire someone to help you with the things that you struggle with or that consume too much of your time. Accept that you can't do it, and it's ok to ask for help.
  3. Never stop learning. Find a mentor take continuing education courses to stay on top of your industry. This way, you will always be moving forward and growing.
