Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sara Anderson, founder of Wearable art from Sara Anderson, located in Tucker, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My amazing customers are lovers of the unique and beautiful. They, like me, support bringing art to life. Our products, our designs, can't be found elsewhere, and the quality is exceptional. Once a client, next to a collector of our unique and always evolving work.
Tell us about yourself
Since childhood, I have been an artist and studied other artists, be it printers, painters, or decorative artists. Though my life has had very diverse experiences, the common thread has always been creativity and creating beauty. I started my business with a desire to bring art into personal self-expression, whether it is how we dress ourselves or our homes. So I paint, draw, print, and often take the work to the next step and bring it to life in our products.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest achievement has been creating a process by which my art has become luxury items that beautify others' lives. When I began, I was selling patterns (intellectual property) but what really came to the forefront was clients (retail, wholesale, and designers) who were looking for luxury items akin to bespoke unique, authentic, and quality materials. I started with our limited edition Kimono and Scarves. I then extended our apparel/accessories offerings and added home goods. Some like for their wardrobe to shine, others their home, and some like it ALL! To make all of this possible, I have made national and international connections with various manufacturers, seamstresses, and media support.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest things are often the other side of the accomplishment coin. In some ways learning the manufacturing ropes hasn't always been straightforward and brought challenges. However, the most difficult thing that occurs to me is navigating media/marketing. I grew up the daughter of a big-time ad man. This is altogether different today and changes quickly. My business has definitely taught me that I alone can not do all things! And that evolved into finding the right people. My successes have involved a very intuitive process.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do something you love; it makes it hard to quit, and there will be days when you feel like quitting or have doubts.
- Create structures (like QuickBooks), the earlier, the better.
- Surround yourself with people that you can learn from, be it encouragement or expertise in an area you know nothing about... and most importantly, LISTEN.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I work daily to know the difference between having a dream or vision and being stubborn and attached. Give your dream a chance to come to fruition in unexpected ways.
