What's your business, and who are your customers?

My husband and I currently own a lash lounge as well as beauty, health, and wellness salon suites. Our customers in our lash lounge are typically women of all ages (however, our lounge is a safe and welcoming place for everyone) who want to skip the morning makeup routine, simplify their beauty regimens, enhance their natural beauty, and feel empowered. Our clients travel from all over the tri-state area and beyond to visit us, which is always a humbling conversation to hear how far a client has traveled to lay on my lash bed. Our salon suites are home to industry professionals, from estheticians to cosmetologists and everything in between.

Tell us about yourself

After getting married, my husband and I knew that we wanted to invest in our future, so we decided to open Iconic Lash Lounge. From humble beginnings, I began lashing as a side hustle from my small living room in my first apartment and, at times, my mom's kitchen because she had what I considered to be perfect lighting at the time, to building my clientele and renting a small room in the back of a hair/nail salon to finally taking the leap of faith and opening my very own exclusive lash lounge with my husband. My husband and I are passionate about what we do and the lives we've touched through our business, while being able to build a legacy with my best friend is priceless.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of the biggest accomplishments my husband and I have achieved as business owners was winning a 2020 Wunderkinds award and being recognized as one of the top 30 under-30 business professionals alongside other extremely talented entrepreneurs.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things, which can also be viewed as one of the best things, about being a business owner is that you are your own boss. While this is definitely a blessing, it also can be challenging at times because you wear many, many hats in your business. You're not clocking in for your typical 9-5 job; being a business owner is a 24-7 commitment. Many times, although you may set healthy work/life boundaries, you find yourself working at all odd hours handling one aspect of the business or another.

Another aspect of being a business owner that proves to be a bit challenging at times is that being your own boss also means holding yourself accountable. No one is going to force you to show up on time, to pencil in that content shoot, or to do absolutely anything that has to do with your business. You have to hold yourself accountable every day, and sometimes that means having those hard conversations with yourself when you get a little off track.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate about the business you decide to start, and always lead with integrity and your heart.
  2. Set clear and distinct goals for yourself and your business, outline what success looks like to you, and be flexible getting there. Success is rarely ever one straight path to the top.
  3. Never be afraid to fail. There's no such thing as failures, just learning experiences.
