Indoor & Outdoor House Repairs - Sammons Handyman Services

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kolten Sammons, Founder of Sammons Handyman Services, located in Fairfield, Iowa, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Sammons Handyman Services, we strive to bring back the ideals of reliability, promptness, transparency, and affordability when you think of hiring contractors. Our customers reach out to us for any and all home repairs. Everything from floor to ceiling. And in-between!

My customers are typically landlords, insurance agencies, live-in homeowners, tenants, or property managers. Anyone who needs home repairs and decided to call in a professional. I've worked with customers younger than me and customers who have retired and need a little help around their homes. People from all backgrounds and walks of life. All customers are welcome.

Tell us about yourself

My interest in home repairs has been instilled in me since I was about 7 years old. I have so many great memories of knocking down walls (just as fun as it sounds), putting drywall back up, and installing flooring in homes, my family had remodeled for us to enjoy. I've always loved problem-solving. When it comes to updating and modernizing houses, there are always many problems to be solved. I had helped fully remodel a couple of childhood homes. And didn't give much thought to similar work beyond those homes for quite some time. But everything I had learned along the way stuck with me. I grew and learned more with each coming year. After high school, I had friends getting into their own homes and apartments and coming to me with problems around their places. I offered to help out with the repairs. I thought to myself, "Why not turn my skills into professions?" And that's what I decided to do.

My daily motivation comes from the desire to give communities a better standard for contractors. I hear all too often about contractors not showing up, doing subpar work, or being dishonest. I'd love to continue to have the opportunity of showing people what they can expect from good contractors. My other motivations are the feelings of satisfaction I get when I successfully restore damage to homes. I get the most satisfaction out of doing finished work like trim, accent walls, and painting. The results are always great, and I love being able to see how good the results I provide are.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest accomplishment as a business owner so far has to be all of the connections I have made with people and companies. I get to meet great people and make fantastic connections. Other business owners always have a good amount of work for us. And that allows us to purchase more tools and assets required to keep this business expanding. This year, we were finally able to launch our website with the help of another Go Solo-featured business, Carlston Creations. Caitlyn was able to design and publish our website for us. And that helps us reach an even bigger audience. Plus, it looks fantastic and really stands out with the beautiful results we've provided to our customers.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing I've realized about being a business owner is the long hours. When you leave a 9-5 job for your own business, you take on a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week job. It's a lot of long, hard work. Early mornings and late nights. It's hard but also so gratifying. I wouldn't have it any other way.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Become an excellent bookkeeper. And if you cannot be one, hire one. It's worth the extra time to keep your paperwork in order. Keep track of your business expenses.
  2. If you can't do something, reach out to someone who can. I've come across a lot of things I can't do. If I can't learn to do them in a timely manner, I will reach out to someone who can. Being vulnerable to the idea of accepting that you can't be a pro at everything is okay. Just strive to do the best YOU can.
  3. Always be expanding your business. Whether it be connections with prospects, physical advertisement, equipment purchases, or learning anyway, you can always be doing something to better and grow your business. And understand that you and your business are two different entities. You both have separate images that need to be upheld.
