Goal Setting and Reinvention - Samantha Kris & Co.

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Samantha Kris, Owner of Samantha Kris & Co., located in Montreal, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

When I started my business, I was doing change management consulting, as well as leadership and communication training for mid-size organizations. I also was a success coach for high-performing intrapreneurs and entrepreneurs alike.

When I was approached by Goalcast to join their team, I needed to take a step back and re-evaluate the direction of my career. It sparked a minor identity crisis because so much of my personal brand was wrapped up in my journey of entrepreneurship. I had finally "made it" on my own, and the idea of joining a company again felt like a step backward. After some major soul-searching, I kept coming back to my "why." I inherently believe I'm here to help people take inspired action, and what better place to do that than with the world's leading empowering media company? I was concerned I'd lose myself, but the reality is, with the support of my team, I learn more about who I am every day.

My business has returned to side hustle status and allows me to continue to develop my thought leadership through my books and public speaking. My work is still deeply rooted in navigating change and personal development. I no longer do consulting or one-on-one coaching. Instead, I bring my message to stages around the world and specialize in the topics of goal setting and reinvention.

Tell us about yourself

If you look at my professional history, you'll see it took a few unexpected turns. My first job out of college was as an addictions counsellor. After a devastating realization that I no longer wanted to stay in that field, despite putting all my eggs in that basket, I stumbled into wedding planning. An unlikely evolution, I know, but I was looking to do something completely different. I found it, along with my first real glimpse of entrepreneurship.

During that time, I discovered a passion for marketing and business development and jumped on an opportunity to manage corporate events for a global technology company. I learned a lot about business, leadership, and communication in a corporate environment. I saw firsthand how much responsibility it is for them to create a vision, communicate it effectively, and support their teams as they execute it - and how lonely it can be. I sought to help them in these areas with my business.

Helping people take inspired action is what motivates me, it always has. Whether as a counsellor, working with couples to plan one of the biggest days of their lives, working alongside executives to develop strong teams, speaking on stage, writing books, or joining a media company committed to changing the world through powerful stories, helping people take inspired action is the common denominator and gets me out of bed each morning.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm very proud that my TEDx talk, Setting Goals that Matter, is the number one talk on goal setting. In it, I share my proprietary goal-setting methodology, the REAL Goal Method, which has helped over one hundred thousand people rethink the way they set and commit to their goals.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

You can't do it all. It's so tempting to just do everything yourself. You tell yourself things will be done properly if you do them. It is not a good use of your time to train someone when you can just do it yourself. You'll catch up on the other areas of the business that are slipping when you have more time. More time isn't coming. More responsibilities are. Regularly assess what can be automated, delegated, or eliminated and free your calendar (and mind) to focus on big-picture things that will allow you to have a bigger impact.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Building a network or community of people who believe in your vision, product, or service is essential. Be intentional about developing and nurturing relationships with people and organizations that want to see you win and help them win in return.
  2. Gone are the days of B2B or B2C companies. We've entered the era of H2H, human-to-human. Connecting with your audience through meaningful content that speaks to their values, motivators, and pain points on a human level is the only way to win.
  3. Double down on your strengths, know your weaknesses, and ask for help.
