Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Samantha Harmon, founder of Samantha's Massage Life, located in Marysville, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I solo run Samantha's Massage Life as a traveling massage therapist in Wheatland, Plumas lake, Marysville, Yuba City, and surrounding areas. My clients are wonderful citizens seeking pain relief and relaxation. Some have more severe conditions that we work on together.

Tell us about yourself

I have a background in nursing (8 years in the field). I was really good at my job but wanted a more holistic approach to pain and to see clients more one-on-one instead of in a hospital setting. I think what really caught my attention and motivates me today is seeing the real-time effects that my sessions have on my clients and the deep appreciation they express to me. I feel like what I do makes a difference in people's lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is that I found my niche. I found what I'm good at, and it happened to me by accident. When the pandemic happened, I planned to go work at a spa, but people kept calling, wanting me to come to their homes. It's more comfortable for the client to have that familiar atmosphere and control of the environment. Everything kind of just fell into place, and the more I actually put effort into the business side of things, the stronger my business grows.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Turning clients away for whatever reason. I feel horrible if my table's weight capacity isn't enough for someone or if they live too far for me to travel to.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be a part of the community. Join all the local Facebook groups. Join small business meet-ups.
  2. Make sure you actually like the work you do. You don't want to burn out or feel like you constantly need a vacation.
  3. Schedule your "you time" in your calendar. If not, you could overwork yourself caring for others.
