Bringing Out the Best in Others - Sam Zanders, Jr.
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sam Zanders, Jr., a health and human performance professional, and athlete wellness coach based in McRae-Helena, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Health and Human Performance. My customers are your general population individuals, your weekend warriors, your special population individuals from diabetics to hypertension, and your serious and elite athletes.
Tell us about yourself
My trip has been a period of transition. I started college with the same enthusiasm and drive that I had for sports and strength and conditioning in high school. I was seeking an internship in collegiate strength and conditioning when I was 19 years old. However, there were no internship opportunities available at my university, so the university assisted me in becoming educated and trained as a personal trainer and strength coach and then hired me to join their fitness center staff, and the rest is history. What inspires me today is the same thing that has always inspired me: fostering relationships, bringing out the best in others, and enriching their lives.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say that my greatest achievement as a business owner has been establishing such long-lasting working relationships that, even after a decade, the same people continue to seek out the services I have offered.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The 80/20 principle. You receive 80% of your business from 20% of your customers. It's a grind, there are no typical hours, and it is characterized by ebbs and flows.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Always know your "WHY" so that when the going gets rough, you will always fall back on your foundation. If feasible, have a strong support structure and financial backing to assist you in overcoming the infant phases. Think long-term, not just today, and consider growth, sustainability, and scalability.
