Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Tucker, Owner, and CEO of Salty Britches®, located in Iva, SC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We have created the brand Salty Britches® in response to our son's need. He could not swim in salt water without suffering from painful chafing. We could not find a product that would hold up in salt water, so we created one! Salty Britches® is a soothing, long-lasting skin barrier ointment against skin irritation that will withstand extreme conditions such as salt water, heat, cold, humidity, or wet conditions. It will prevent chafing or blisters. Our customers include families that vacation at the beach, surfers, ultra-endurance athletes, outdoor enthusiasts, and those that wear a uniform or serve in the military.
Tell us about yourself
I did not set out to become an entrepreneur. I had a career and a completely full life before Salty Britches®. I created Salty Britches for my son so we could enjoy the beach. Little did I know when word got out that I had a solution to this issue, demand would explode. As a family, we decided to pursue this because of the demand, sold everything we owned, and moved to a tiny house to boot-strap our business. Salty Britches is a part of our family. Every day is different, and we have been fortunate enough to meet so many incredible people through this journey. It truly is not work, and we are absolutely obsessed with serving our customers and creating this community of people who are leveling up every day. This community has made us level up as well, and that is so addicting!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say never giving up. Building a brand from scratch is super difficult. Making it through COVID and supply chain nightmares was tough. We stayed the course. We have also taken our products to events such as ultra races and met so many people that have helped build our following, community and ambassadors.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Trying to do all the things on a shoestring budget. We are earning our way and putting in the work. It doesn't stop. You have to be a bit obsessed with the goal, all while making sure you take care of yourself.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Be sure to surround yourself with mentors and those that know more than you. Invest in a mastermind, which is often full of mentors and even customers. Take care of yourself and exercise, or you will not have the stamina you need to do all the things. But be clear about your goals to your family and friends because your life will morph, and the people around you will change. Know that upfront and be aware of who you are listening to.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Growing a brand and starting your own business is not for the faint. It takes grit, stamina, determination, and a willingness to listen to your gut. I highly recommend a mastermind group so you can learn from others and build a network of people around you that know more than you do!
