What's your business, and who are your customers?

Myself and my business partner, Amy Schmidt, run Salt City Smithery, a full-service studio offering classes in silversmithing, lapidary, and lost wax casting. Our customers are people young and older who are interested in making jewelry from silver and other metals.

Tell us about yourself

I have been silversmithing for 40 years. After I retired, I began silversmithing full-time and, in 2016, began teaching. When COVID shut down the school I was teaching at, Amy and I created Salt City Smithery, a studio where we could teach and create jewelry. We work hard to build a community of support among our students and host the Metal Arts Guild of Utah. I’m motivated by my passion for silversmithing and my love of passing this craft on to others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Offering quality classes to our students that will ensure their success in silversmithing for an affordable price.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Sticking to a budget and business plan will keep the business open and running over the long haul. Being prepared for the unexpected.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be passionate about the reason for your business!! Stick to a budget and avoid unnecessary debt!! Be willing to spend the time and energy to make your business a success!!
