Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Salima Benkhalti, Founder of Salima's Kitchen, located in Olympia, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Salima's Kitchen is a food blog focused on sharing recipes inspired by my Puerto Rican and Moroccan roots. Readers usually have some kind of connection to my culture, whether they are also from Puerto Rico or Morocco, have visited, or are just interested in learning more.
Tell us about yourself
I first started the blog as a place to record family recipes for myself. While this has transformed since I started back in 2016, I still find it motivates me on a daily basis. I really love learning more about my culture through food and sharing that with others.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being able to achieve a healthier work-life balance. For me, success isn't about landing a big deal or hitting a certain number. I want to enjoy life above anything else, and having a job that allows me to do that feels like a huge accomplishment.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Feeling like the work never ends! There is always more that can be done. A new recipe for shooting or testing, a new ingredient to experiment with. It's pretty exciting but also can feel overwhelming.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Start messy, and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are the building blocks that will teach you what you didn't know before. Keep showing up for yourself every day, whether you're achieving a little or a lot. You will appreciate and respect yourself for staying consistent, and growth will follow.
