Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dianna Fallon, treasurer of Salem NH Farmers Market, located in Salem, NH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Food shopping that is exciting and sustainable direct from small local producers. Most of your grocery cart items are available each Sunday. Meat, milk products, eggs, bread, and vegetables are all in one easy, fun location.

Tell us about yourself

Salem NH Farmers Market has had many women directing its growth and development starting with the founder, Jane Lang. Jane had a dream to create an environment once a week that would bring fresh food to her community and support local farmers and entrepreneurs. Jane found support for her market in other women, and an all-female board was born.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We have grown over the last 12 years from a small market to over 40 vendors. In the last few years, we have also been able to provide jobs for young women interested in alternate food distributing business models. We now have great men on the board that believe in the mission of the market.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Meeting the needs of vendors and customers during COVID. We never missed a Sunday even moving outside in the cold because our vendors lost outlets for their products and our customers want access to food items now gone from grocery store shelves. We managed to serve both populations even in the snow!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Only one, just do it. You will make mistakes, be stressed, and lose sleep, but don't let the dream die for lack of trying.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

The minutia of business is frustrating, and it feels like you're not moving forward because those big picture projects seem to be put on hold while you deal with the day-to-day. But the day-to-day is the engine that keeps the business moving forward. We still need to make time for social media, marketing plans, budgets, etc., but being in the moment in business is key.
