Normalizing Pay Conversations - Salary Transparent Street
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hannah Williams, Founder of Salary Transparent Street, located in Alexandria, VA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Salary Transparent Street is a viral online series I created in April 2022 to demonstrate the value of salary transparency and empower everyday workers with its benefits.
Tell us about yourself
I'm a 25-year-old content creator based in the Washington, DC, Metro Area. I was inspired by my experience of finding out I was underpaid because of pay secrecy practices that I frequently encountered at work. I realized that many of these discriminatory tendencies also contributed to pay gaps affecting women, minorities, workers with disabilities, and the LGBTQ+ community. Salary Transparent Street breaks this surrounding taboo conversations about money and encourages workers and corporations to be transparent, also contributing to a nationwide movement to pass pay transparency laws. Knowing that our videos help workers make the money they deserve motivates me daily to keep going.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment has been our contribution to the national pay transparency movement and helping workers make more money without charging them a cent. Many workers we talk to aren't aware of their state's labor laws, or it's illegal for their employers to prevent them from discussing their pay. We give them this information, tools, and resources for free, and many have increased their incomes as a result.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Being a business owner but also a creator, it's incredibly difficult to maintain a good work-life balance. The internet never stops, and when your business is on the internet, it can be hard to get away from it and recharge, so you don't lose creativity and burn out. It's critical to have good schedule-management skills and habits to do this job.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
If you want to have your own business, you need to first identify what you're passionate about. Sometimes this can be confused with having a passion for a product. For example, a good dog food business owner doesn't have to be passionate about dog food, but they have to be passionate about dog health to make a good product. Once you identify that passion, you must relate it to a clear mission. What do you want to achieve with your business? What does the end goal look like for your product, customers, and yourself? Finally, you have to craft a plan and figure out how you will achieve your mission through your passion. What kind of equipment, systems, or people do you need? Leverage the internet and TikTok! You'll find lots of answers to those questions online from people who've learned and shared their own experiences.
