Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Samantha Sewell, Owner of Sage Midwifery, PLLC, located in Fairfax.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sage Midwifery provides out-of-hospital midwifery care and homebirth services. We serve pregnant folks across DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Tell us about yourself

I moved from Texas to Washington, DC, to work on progressive causes via non-profit organizations. About 9 years in, I realized that my heart and energy were more invested in direct healthcare as opposed to organizing and policy. My first pregnancy led me to midwifery, and I have been obsessed ever since. It is client-centered, holistic, evidence-based care. I am a Certified Professional Midwife, which means my expertise is in homebirth, so it is natural for CPMs to start their own practice once they finish training and get their license.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I signed a 5-year lease on an office space in June 2022. For me, part of being a midwife is building community because, these days, parents are more isolated. Raising children takes a village. Stepping into parenthood also takes a village. I want the office to be a space where friendships are formed, where children can play together while their parents sip from a warm mug of tea, and where someone can pop in for a prenatal yoga class or a massage before their prenatal visit with me.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The administrative work! I am a midwife by trade, but the amount of paperwork I have to deal with is daunting. It includes filing birth certificates, filling out parental leave forms, insurance billing, basic accounting, and everything in between.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Bet on yourself.
  2. Have a solid foundation before you launch (legal paperwork, website, branding, business structure).
  3. Make time for pleasure—schedule outdoor time for yourself, go on vacations, and get a massage. You need to remember why you are doing this work! And you can’t do it burnt out.
