Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Megan Sax, Creatrix of Sacred Yoga & Sound LLC., located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is in an on-demand and virtual live yoga studio to help people establish a home practice. In a post-pandemic society with work/home hybrid jobs blurring even more work/life balance, political unrest, intense and saddening violence, the destruction of rights, the erosion of our environment, a looming recession, and just overall intense life, we need self-care more than ever. But we need more than just baths; we need a lifestyle shift. My Awake & Activate on-demand yoga studio empowers people to not only nurture the body through the asana practices but also to tone their nervous system through breathwork, rest their minds through meditation, and raise their vibrations through self-study rooted in yogic philosophy and science. I have also created two stand-alone offerings: Breathe & Be, to teach five techniques to help with different states of mind for those whose nervous systems are heightened, are near burnout, are overwhelmed, lack focus, etc., in helping them balance and center. I also have a Yoga for Ergonomics series to help people take more breaks during the day. I believe that something is better than nothing, so my classes range from 5-45-minutes to helping others "fit it in their day" better.

Tell us about yourself

I have been practicing yoga for over 20 years and have experienced the power of yoga. The asana practice healed my relationship with my body and food, pranayama/breathwork healed my burnout after 15+ years in the corporate world, meditation helps me clear and focus my mind, and the philosophy guides me in how I engage with the world. I know the curated practices I offer are healing and supporting others who are overwhelmed, out of alignment, and/or looking to deepen their yoga practice not only brings me joy but feels like it is my purpose.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is shifting my priorities from being in the corporate world as an Art Director first and a Yoga teacher on the side to using my skills to design an online yoga studio and other yoga-related self-paced offerings.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think one of the hardest things is recognizing that you have this brilliant offering, you've built an entire business around it, and now you have to find the people that resonate with you. Putting yourself out there is incredibly vulnerable, and it can be a challenge to show up every day in ways that help you connect with others in a way that inspires them to work with you more.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get organized by creating a structure. Having a container to work within can be a springboard to getting things done. For example, create a calendar of what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, and do it. Having this structure will help you get into a rhythm and make sure you are staying on target.
  2. Don't give up! This takes time and trust. And your business may blossom slower than you would like or have planned, but quitting isn't going to make it go faster. Show up every single day anyway, and dedicating yourself to your dream is the way to manifest it.
  3. Make sure to rest and self-care. It's easy to become all-consumed and feel like you can't take a break b/c your business may fail. But if you don't take a break ... your mind/body may start to enter a burnout cycle, making it harder for you to focus on your business.
