Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Maribeth Decker, owner of Sacred Grove Animal Communication, located in Alexandria, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm an intuitive animal communicator with a background in medical intuition and energy healing. I work with people who love their animals as much as - or sometimes more than - the people in their lives. Most of my sessions are remote, so I've worked with people and their pets in several countries.

People come to me when they need help with pets or animals having behavioral or physical issues. I specialize in helping folks navigate their animal's decline and transition to the next life. I recently published the second edition of my #1 new release in pet loss grief, "Peace in Passing: Comfort for Loving Humans During Animal Transitions."

Tell us about yourself

I became an animal communicator later in life when my dogs started communicating with me. I was floored - didn't know animal communication was a viable career! I felt guided to learn more about animal communication and started working with people and their pets.

I am so delighted to work with people who love their animals so much, they're part of their family. And getting to know all sorts of animal personalities never gets old!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is creating a business that continues to attract loving humans. I can make a difference in so many animals' and peoples' lives because their relationships improve.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it was how to build a successful business, one that attracts the right clients, so I enjoy what I'm doing, and it brings in income.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get enough confidence in yourself, so you know you provide a real service.
  2. Train and practice, but don't get stuck in the "I need more training before becoming a business owner" mentality. You can continue to train in your specialty, but at some point, you have to create a business if you want to impact more people.
  3. Find mentors in your field and marketing with who you resonate with and who've already built successful businesses. Learn from them and take action.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Find a group of people who support and believe in you so that you can keep on. That has helped me.
