Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tiffany Schade, Founder of Sacred Child Beauty, located in Texas, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sacred Child Beauty is a cruelty-free, super-pigmented, non-toxic cosmetics brand for people of all backgrounds. I believe in adding as many "clean" alternatives into your life as possible. You don't have to be a total "clean" beauty queen to use Sacred Child Beauty. We don't use any petroleum-derived ingredients, formaldehyde, mercury, parabens, phthalates, PFAS, etc., along with 2,000+ ingredients that have safety concerns for humans and the environment. We don't test on animals! I create clean beauty formulas that also perform incredibly well. SCB's lipstick is beautifully pigmented, moisturizing, and lasts forever through whatever you have going on. For every product I develop, I try out myself through the entire process. We want you to think about what you are putting on your body and use your voice to ask questions. There's so much out there that needs to change in the world, and we all need to use our voices to question what is the "status quo" is it impacting our bodies, the environment, and other humans positively or negatively, and if that impact is negative. We have a full range of products in various shades, and we actually have some very exciting things in the works. I can't tell you what it is yet but keep a lookout for a couple of new SKUs coming in February.

Tell us about yourself

My professional background is in cosmetics. I've worked for some amazing companies like Sephora, Estee Lauder, and The Body Shop. Cosmetics can change your day! The right lipstick can brighten up your face which can give you that extra lift to accomplish your day!

2015 was a year of massive change for me in my personal life. Pre-pandemic, I was unexpectedly home-schooling my 5-year-old son with learning differences and also dealing with some health issues. To keep my mind engaged and to better understand how to help my son and myself, I became a certified Holistic Health Coach. I was blown away by what I was learning about the lack of real regulation in both cosmetics and skincare, as well as the food industry. I had assumed the FDA required product safety testing (which they don't) and that more "concerning" ingredients were banned, like in the EU. I began looking for "clean" lipstick that I could buy to replace my favorite colors. Lipstick is on our lips, and we consume the ingredients multiple times a day as we reapply. I LOVE bold colors, and I couldn't find a "non-toxic" lipstick that had bold, gorgeous lipstick colors and was also long-lasting. So I started researching how to manufacture clean lipstick.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Overcoming my self-doubt and fear. I think women can be less bold and secure in what they are trying to create in their lives. We are taught to be quiet, demure, supportive, and soft. After having my son, I saw how bold he is in asking for what he wants and needs. I decided that I needed to be more like that as well. This led me on the path to finding supportive people to share my business ideas with (which terrified me as I had a huge fear of failure). It is so important to "act as if," which for me meant to "act as if" I'm confident, successful, and fearless. You can't move forward if you're not willing to take any steps.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It's hard feeling alone in making business decisions. It is crucial to find a group of entrepreneurs for support and business discussions, advice, etc. If you're a female entrepreneur, it is really important to find other female entrepreneurs as we face more professional challenges and less comradery than men. I found an amazing group that I've been a member of since the beginning of the year. It is called Fyli, and it is a mastermind and support for early-stage female founders. Being a member has been transformative for me personally and for my business. Most of the women are in other parts of the US or Europe, and we meet virtually. Find people to support, help and celebrate you on your journey to success!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It is a long game. Be prepared for it to take years to develop and build your business.
  2. Find like-minded entrepreneurs to support you along the way.
  3. Ask questions even if you think you "should" know the answers.
