What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business, Sabrina Louisa Consulting LLC, works with small companies that know there is more to their HR policies than doing the minimum required by law. My clients are interested in ensuring that their policies and practices exceed what is expected, looking to entice new employees and keep their current staff engaged in their roles. Each client gets customized and creative solutions that reflect their core values.

Tell us about yourself

I started my company largely because I believe that even small companies, ones that do not need and cannot afford a high-level HR employee, deserve to have access to knowledge, skills, and experience that comes from someone with my history in HR. Seeing the CEOs and owners I work with getting results they didn't think were possible is so satisfying. I love helping them be competitive in the larger business network.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been helping my clients navigate the trickier aspects of HR in a way that leaves them feeling like they've done the right thing by their staff.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner for me is the regular cycle of prospecting and sales. It is a constant necessity for a small business owner, and it takes me away from the work I really love to do, but it is all part of running your own company.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a solid idea and the ability to succinctly describe what you are going to offer/sell/provide. No one can buy what you sell if you cannot explain it simply to them.
  2. Do your research on your market, your rates, and your estimated expenses. There are so many moving pieces that it can be easy to miss important items or to spend money on programs/software you just don't need.
  3. Get connected and network as much as you can. Meet people locally and nationally if your business can work nationwide. You never know who you will meet or who they may be able to introduce you to.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Running a business can seem daunting, but if you're willing to put in the time and effort, it can be such a rewarding experience. I have learned so much about myself and the business world around me since I started being responsible for everything.
