Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Martin Dubreuil, co-founder and CEO of S-SENS Food, located in Gatineau, QC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
S-SENS Food is "Creating business opportunities by connecting professional Buyers with professional Sellers." We leverage our vast International Network and local partners to facilitate international trade.
Tell us about yourself
I am passionate about food, especially the discovery of new flavours, tastes, and textures. I have been in the food industry for over 25 years, working and living in 10 countries across America, Europe, and Asia. A few years ago, I decided to use my vast experience and my passion for food discovery to help small and medium companies to achieve their ambitions for international expansion. This was when I founded S-SENS Food.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Having started a new business venture in the middle of the worst pandemic in modern history was not easy, yet, we managed to grow from a single-person business to a network of +20 people operating in 17 countries. We represent companies from more than 25 countries and have access to thousands of amazing products ready to be discovered by the world.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
As a startup, you have to do everything yourself. Resources (human and financial) are scarce, so everyone must roll up their sleeves and be creative. Facing uncertainty and new challenges on a daily basis and remaining positive is definitely a big challenge.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just start! This is the biggest and most difficult thing to do. Once you jumped, you realized that it was scarier than it really was.
- Network, Network, Network. You never know who you are going to meet, and that may take your business in a new direction.
- Fear, not failure. Failure is also learning, and learning is one of the most valuable things in business.
