Stop Evaluate Reassess Follow - S.E.R.F.
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kerry Wilson, Founder of S.E.R.F., located in Brampton, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
S.E.R.F stands for Stop Evaluate Reassess Follow-through with your life. I am a Behavioral Management Consultant with over a decade of frontline and private experience.
As a certified Child and Youth Worker, I realized that a lot of our black, Caribbean, and African children/youth get too many negative labels when it comes to the system. Our children/youth and families are in need of more personalized care because our children get left behind due to cultural differences, generational trauma, and environmental effects. As a single mother of 4 young black boys, I come from lived experiences of navigating the system in order to create the best resources to help my black boy's mental health and educational experience. I utilize my cognitive and behavioral management skills to offer an individualized and holistic approach to care. We are unique because we approach every client from a culturally sensitive lens with the emphasis that it takes a village to raise a child. We offer online and in-person individualized plans of care with support every step of the way. If you would like more information or to reach me, please go to www.serfyourlife.com.
Tell us about yourself
I am a resilient, determined mother of 4 young black boys to men who have utilized all of her life trials and tribulations to continue to thrive in whatever I put my mind to. I am dedicated to helping our black community relearn, and implement positive mental health, self-care, and wellness practices which, unfortunately, have not always been taught to no fault of our own. I want to create a safe space for my children and all of our children to live up to their potential without unnecessary barriers.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishments thus far are having the strength to start a business in my 40's and being able to show my children that at any age, you can create your own path where there is a will, there's a way. They are a big part of my will, and I continue to forge my way slowly and steadily win the race.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing about being a business owner is always showing up for yourself. When your business is dependent on your efforts alone, it is not always easy when you use to being a worker bee mentality. I have had to switch my mindset and show up for myself even when I do not feel like it because it is a journey, not just the destination.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Show up for yourself even if you don't feel like it.
- Do not compare yourself to anyone else; your path is yours alone; everything will come. Just stay steady.
- A close mouth doesn't get fed. Always ask for help, even if you are not sure what kind of help you may need.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I want to say that we as a community need to start investing in our children's mental health and wellness; generational wealth is more than financial; it is a generation of well-rounded children that turn out to be well-rounded adults with skills in their mental toolbox to be passed down from generation to generation. That is my gift to my clients.
