Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ryan Meghdies, Founder of Tastic Marketing Inc., located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Tastic Marketing is a premium full-service digital marketing agency. We service local small businesses and enterprises with a global presence. What our clients have in common is their value for a trusted partner with industry-leading expertise.
Tell us about yourself
I was very fortunate that my family immigrated to Canada. They taught me the value of hard work and were the reason I took an interest in technology early on. As a child, I built circuits, learned to write code, and volunteered at a small software company. When I turned 16, that small business hired me as a software tester. One of the executives happened to start a marketing agency and offered me a contract to do marketing. I didn't know anything about marketing then, but he knew I'd learn quickly, which is exactly what I did. Fast forward a few decades, and as the owner of a marketing agency, I am eager to get up every day to help my clients grow their businesses. I have an incredible team that shares my passion for crafting innovative high-end solutions that make a significant impact.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I struggled to be a business owner. There were and still are many lessons for me, but I embrace that challenge and the journey to learn constantly. I was amazed at the generosity of the people I met and their willingness to teach or help me. So today, I pass that along by helping other entrepreneurs with their businesses. I genuinely believe it's more valuable to be a light in the world than to store wealth for a greedy heart.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
That will undoubtedly be different for every business owner. For myself, learning to sell was quite a challenge. As a certified nerd (BEng/MASc), I love learning about problems and crafting innovative strategies. However, selling requires me to slow down and navigate meetings at a less natural pace.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Stay focused. You might have more opportunities or ideas, but direct your energy in one direction until it's successful or you decide to move on.
- Don't start a business where you create a job for yourself. Instead, figure out a path to building a company.
- Become an expert. Consider what your business requires to reach the goals you have set out. What expertise will you need to have to get your business there? Then, work hard and push to become that expert. Read books, seek mentorship, try, fail, adapt, and learn.
