What's your business, and who are your customers?

RXLA the brand is a home and body fragrance company, and we got our start on Kickstarter! We, Jennifer and Jocelyn, are Asian Americans and sisters. We own and operate the company ourselves. All our fragrances are blended in-house and used to make all of our products.

Tell us about yourself

For years my sister Jocelyn and I worked full-time jobs while setting up our booths all over town at pop-ups on the weekends. Then at night, we'd have to make everything after work. Thanks to our loyal customers, we've grown organically by continuing to do our pop-ups. Now we have one full-time employee and three part-time employees. Seeing our business grow and our customers truly love our products keeps us going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being in business! Owning and operating our own company with no outside investors is a huge accomplishment. Being able to support ourselves while doing something fun is awesome.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being responsible for our employees. Sometimes things are slow, and it would be easier if we had lower overhead. So making sure we are always motivated and pushing through can be tough.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You can potentially make more money working for "the man," but having your own freedom to make your own money is freeing.
  2. Being in charge of your own financial freedom can be terrifying, but it is also exciting.
  3. Be in it for the long run. We weren't able to quit our day jobs for three years of working nights and weekends after a full-time day job.
