Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ruthann Weeks, a People & Culture Strategist of Harmony In The Workplace, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
At Harmony In The Workplace, we help employers navigate the complexities of the 21st-century workplace with their people and culture strategy. Our clients recognize that the world of work has changed and that addressing workplace mental health, preventing psychological harm, and providing tools to address complex relationships amongst a multi-generational workforce is paramount to business success.
Tell us about yourself
I started my business in 2016 when I found myself unexpectedly unemployed, having experienced workplace bullying. I was devastated and reevaluated how I wanted to use my skills, gifts, talents, and abilities to serve the world. I work diligently to not only raise awareness about workplace abuse, mental health, and the need for psychological health and safety but to provide practiced and practical tools to address these often complex issues.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have been privileged to speak on many event stages, conference breakout sessions, and panels, as well as private industries, associations, and post-secondary institutions about today's workplace challenges.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The biggest challenge is getting leaders to say 'yes' to investing in their employees' wellness and mental health. There remains a stigma that is getting busted more every day as we work to normalize the conversation. Organizations that get it right position themselves as employers of choice and have a competitive advantage in attracting and retaining top performers.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Surround yourself with people that are really good at the things you are not.
- Don't be afraid to invest in your own professional development.
- Keep your focus on your people and being relational, and those individuals will work hard to help you achieve your business goals.
