Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jeff Gaudette, Founder of RunnersConnect, located in San Ysidro, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Our business is called RunnersConnect, and we help runners ages 30 to 70 train smarter, run faster, and stay healthy. We do this through a variety of platforms, such as our blog, podcast, YouTube channel, and newsletter, as well as providing customized training schedules, personal coaching, and strength and nutrition plans.
Tell us about yourself
I've been running since I was 15 and even competed professionally for a few years. I realized early in my career that I loved researching training science and helping apply concepts to other runners. Helping people achieve their goals is one of the most rewarding things you can do. While most of the results our athletes want are physical, most often, the journey also involves a huge personal transformation as well. Even after 15 years of coaching, I still get a thrill from seeing an athlete accomplish something they only dreamed of doing.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our biggest accomplishment is how many runners we've helped over the years. We've helped over 600 people qualify for the Boston Marathon, and over 2,000 people record new personal bests.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Adapting and changing with technology. Web development, social media, and running tech have changed dramatically since we started.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Focus on a specific niche. Once you find your ideal customer, craft all your messaging and contact directly to them.
- Test before you start anything. Don't spend 6-12 months building or creating something - test the idea first before you build or create.
- Find a good support group outside your home. Building a business has a lot of amazing days but a lot of difficult days too. Find people who can help you through the rough patches.
