Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lyndsey Harper, founder and CEO of Rosy, located in Dallas, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Rosy is a first-of-its-kind app and media platform that offers personalized solutions for sexual wellness. We have three membership tiers available. Our offerings include customized Wellness Plans, individual and group intimacy coaching, audio and written erotica, educational videos, a supportive online community, and more.

I founded Rosy out of a genuine need! As a practicing OB/GYN, many of my patients came to me with sexual concerns and questions that they’d left unaddressed for years. Wanting to learn more and help my patients more deeply, I pursued an ISSWSH fellowship in sexual wellness, where I discovered real evidence-based solutions for women who face sexual challenges. Many of these solutions are overlooked due to sensitivity around the topic and lack of proper physician time and training.

Rosy was created to be a safe place for women (and people with vulvas) to find connections and interventions for sexual health needs on their own terms, all within one trusted, research-backed platform. And medical professionals agree – more than 6% of Ob/Gyns in the United States are now recommending Rosy to their patients.

Given my medical background, Rosy is quite unique in that we bridge the gap between the medical community and regular women.

Tell us about yourself

I am the founder and CEO of Rosy, a dynamic resource to connect the 84 million women in the US with sexual problems with hope, community, and research-backed solutions to improve their lives.

I completed my Ob/Gyn residency in 2011 at Baylor Scott & White Health in Dallas, Texas. Saw patients in private practice for seven years and am now a hospitalist, Associate Professor of Ob/Gyn for Texas A&M College of Medicine, a Fellow of The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and a Fellow of the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health.

As I was seeing patients in private practice, I realized just how many women have sexual problems or questions. Women are faced with a complete lack of sex ed, information about pleasure, and training about how to talk about sexual issues. These challenges stifle our ability to successfully navigate changes in our sexual health that happen to all of us. I feel passionate that women deserve better. As a physician, I was in the unique position to be able to do something about it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a small team, I am so proud that we have created a new product in a new category that more than 4000 doctors and therapists now recommend in just three years with a relatively small amount of funding is something that still surprises and inspires us daily. We know that billions of women across the globe need the services that we provide, and we are overjoyed to have so much traction and brand love in this tough space to try to solve these problems for women in a meaningful way.

We also recently won a Webby Award for Best Visual Design - Aesthetic! As a small but mighty team who put in many hours of hard work on our app design and aesthetic, this really meant a lot.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a business owner is a huge opportunity but also a huge responsibility. The team that works with me every day is such a dedicated, smart, and fun group of people, and I want to do the very best I can for them. To me, this looks like dedicating time to personal and professional growth while also supporting them to the best of my ability on this journey. Startup life is unpredictable, and it is always important to me to take really good care of the people who have taken this risk with me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Try a low-key, low-budget test to make sure that the product or service you are thinking of offering is wanted by the people that you think you might sell to.
  2. Try to find a different way to get to those customers than other companies have in the past.
  3. Tie your business to something you really care about and know a lot about. This will give you the steam you need to keep going on the hard days and position you as an expert in the field so that you can spread the word about your unique offering.
