Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Roseanne Pararuan, Founder of Roseanne's Tutoring Room, located in Spring, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I provide individualized tutoring services in my clients' homes. I have clients all around the Houston area, but my area of focus is north of the city, in the Spring/Woodlands/Tomball/Conroe areas.

Tell us about yourself

I am a former classroom educator. I mostly taught Kindergarten and Early Childhood. During the pandemic, when everything shut down or pivoted to online instruction, I started tutoring former students who needed a little bit of support. I found that I enjoyed it so much and that it helped my kids so much that I decided to do a business out of it.

Being able to help kids who otherwise might be getting left behind motivates me to keep going. Every child deserves to have access to all the resources and a good team behind them, helping them succeed.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I don't look at my accomplishments as big or small. Any time a child understands a new concept or feels confident in their skills, or a parent shows me an improvement in their child's grades- those are all real accomplishments. In the grand scheme of things, they may not seem big, but to those students and their families, they're huge.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

In my opinion, one of the hardest things about being a business owner is asking for help. I am notorious for being hyper-independent and wanting to do everything myself, so I had to learn this one.

Every small business is unique, so the thought process is that no one else understands exactly what you're going through. While that may be true, there are still plenty of people who can help you with the big picture, and sometimes, just having someone to throw ideas back and forth with is a huge help.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just do it. There will never be a time when you're completely ready. If there is something you're passionate about, then it's worth exploring.
  2. Have confidence in yourself and your skills. No one can do what you do the way you do it. When people see that you're passionate about what you're doing and have the skills and experience, they will gravitate toward you.
  3. Make the sacrifice. A business building can be scary- the hours you put in, the money you spend, and putting yourself out there. The discomfort you feel in the beginning and the capital you invest- those things will all come back to you. Short-term sacrifice equals long-term success.
