Salon Experience That Every Client Deserves - Roots Salon

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Naomi Prusinski, co-owner of Roots Salon, located in Wisconsin, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My partner and I own a multi-location salon company. We started by wanting to give our guests something different in value and making them feel like the experience was something they deserved. Salon experiences can often be intimidating, and we wanted comfort. Our team gives that experience and so much more in our salon.

Tell us about yourself

I started in the beauty business 26 years ago and couldn’t imagine being where I am today with my partners. I have always wanted to make people look beautiful, but from now on, I want to give employees a career they deserve, along with my partner. We now have shareholders on our team, making the dream of ownership a reality for employees.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We just celebrated 15 years of being open after opening during a recession and then going through Covid, I doubt anything could stop our team. So time, as we see it, is the biggest accomplishment so far.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Change, the business is always growing and evolving. Whether it be employees' needs, clients' needs, or how we run our business. We are always thinking about what does the next ten years look like.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You really need to determine before starting whether or not you have the heart and grit to make it through the down times. The good times are easy, but the down times can really tear into your self-image and how much it really takes to stay open.
  2. Take a day or two to think about major decisions after you know what the decision is. Think about how it affects those around you and if it truly is the right direction.
  3. Grow some tough skin. Not everyone will be pleased with you all the time, can you take it? Otherwise, it can be an emotional rollercoaster every day.
