A Safe Place - Rooted Psychiatry and Wellness

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alysha Woods, Founder of Rooted Psychiatry and Wellness, located in Altadena, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner as well as the owner and founder of a mental health clinic in Los Angeles, CA. I serve teens and adults with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and ADHD using holistic and western medical interventions. I also have the joy of offering coaching, courses, and mentorship to other Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners who want to go solo and start their own mental health clinics.

Tell us about yourself

I have been working in mental health for over ten years in different capacities and what motivates me is seeing my students grow and watching my patients heal and live fuller lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was when I reached one year of my business being open, and it was fully functioning, profitable, with a great schedule/work-life balance, and providing great care to my patients!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is impostor syndrome and taking the risk of going solo. Most of my business knowledge was self-taught, and I was constantly questioning if I could be successful. This is why I added coaching into my business to share with others what I wish I knew! I would have loved to have known someone who could guide me in those first steps.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a strong reason for why you are starting a business; my purpose was to have more time with my family and give patients excellent care, and practice psychiatry the way I wanted to. This reason will carry you through when it gets hard.
  2. Find a "Niche" or Specialty and lean into that. This way, when people think about a problem that needs to be solved, you are the first person that comes to mind because you specialize in that problem.
  3. Be stubborn and tenacious, and remember that there are no failures or mistakes, only lessons that teach you how to be even better in the future. Growth is a part of the process always; no one is perfect.
