Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Samantha Loos, Founder of Root to Table, located in Harvard, MA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Root to Table is a woman-owned personal chef company. We serve nutritious and seasonal meals to busy folks and families in the Greater Nashoba Valley of Massachusetts. Our mission is to provide locally sourced, seasonal wellness to our clients, taking the stress out of meal times.
Tell us about yourself
I grew up (and still am) obsessed with food! It was and is at the center of every family gathering. We're always planning our next meal, finding new restaurants to try, local farms to visit, and places to pick berries and have ice cream. Nourishment is the way my family and I share our love.
I have a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts (Ceramics specifically) but have always worked in the food service industry. I've been a barista, server, baker, prep cook, shift opener, line cook, garde manger, a brief stint as a pastry chef, and finally, personal chef. I worked under a fellow personal chef for about four years before moving and starting my own business. I loved that personal cheffing allowed for a flexible schedule and creativity that I did not find in the restaurant industry. I'm motivated to create colorful and nourishing menus for my clients.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Hearing positive feedback from our clients makes their lives easier and more delicious!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
You are never not thinking about your business, making it difficult to disconnect and take time away. The buck stops and ends with you. I am the marketing team, bookkeeper, problem solver, errand runner, grocery shopper, cook, cleaner, delivery driver, and so much more.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just do it! Start small - if you are passionate about what you do, clients and customers will see that and flock to your energy.
- Outsource any of your improficiencies. For example, if you're not a numbers person (I am not..), hire a bookkeeper.
- Hire support staff before you need them because you will grow!
