Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rebecca Arnold, Founder & Leadership Coach of Root Coaching & Consulting, LLC, located in Arlington, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an executive and leadership coaching firm. Our clients are high-achieving leaders in the fields of education, medicine, and law. Our clients want to step boldly into their authentic leadership, be change-makers in complex fields, and live in sustainable, life-honoring ways.

Tell us about yourself

I am a straight-talking, big-hearted coach who believes that we all have incredible resourcefulness and capacity. I deeply respect my clients and want the absolute best for them, so I deliver paradigm-shifting, transformational coaching. Together, my clients and I have fiery conversations sprinkled with care, humor, and insight.

I am a lawyer by training, have a background in education policy and psychology, and am a certified coach. I'm also a mom to teenagers. Coaching is a marriage of my deepest interests and belief in humans' endless capacity for growth and change. What motivates me most is seeing my clients grow in ways that surprise them, whether that's a new job, deeper relationships, or a leadership stand that honors their values. I know that their growth has ripple impacts on their teams, organizations, families, and communities. This lights me up and keeps me learning and growing as a coach. Having recovered from burnout in my previous field, I am committed to supporting folks to work and live sustainably. That way, they remain at the top of their game as they rewrite the rules.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm proud to have clients ranging from physicians and superintendents to professors and vice presidents. Seeing the tectonic mental shifts my clients make is astounding. I've had my coaching called a "psychical exfoliation," which delights me. Often, I'm merely helping my clients see, remember, and feel their incredible skills, gifts, and essence. I'm proud to donate a portion of my income to non-profit organizations to offer two sliding-scale coaching slots and to be a volunteer coach for a number of projects.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is remembering that I get to create my own rules of engagement instead of following others' "shoulds, musts, and can't's." I aim for my business to always be a reflection of my values, which include freedom, equity, connection, growth, and contribution. This impacts who I choose to partner with as clients and service providers, how I structure my time, and the investments I make.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You create your own rules of engagement. Don't be swayed by white, patriarchal, capitalistic norms.
  2. Work in ways that nourish yourself: your creativity, well-being, spirituality, health, learning, and so on.
  3. There is infinite abundance. Money is energy, so you decide where to earn money from, how to use it with intention, and what your own financial goals are.
