Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ron Hill, owner of STR8 Performance Training and Exercise Therapy, located in Plainfield, IL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
STR8 PERFORMANCE is a company that specializes in training, health coaching, training and fitness gear, and events. We have been in business since 2013, but the owners have been in the fitness and martial arts industry for over 25 years. The owners have always paired fitness classes with their martial arts schools and, before that, have run successful programs in various institutions.
Tell us about yourself
What first got us into fitness was martial arts training, and we saw that fitness training and performance training was a perfect complement to martial arts training. We knew that when we were blessed to open a school that it would be a part of the school from the beginning.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our biggest accomplishment as business owners is our longevity. As martial arts and fitness facility owners, we have been rocking out for over 22 years. Also, we have trained many high-level athletes in both martial arts, MMA, and other sports.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about being a business owner is that you have to be dedicated to it, good times and really bad ones. It has to be a huge part of your life. It will take tons of sacrifice.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
My first tip is to be as educated as you can be in your field. That does not necessarily mean going on to higher education, but getting all of the knowledge you can afford and acquire. Number 2 is to start where you are and build from there. Get it where you fit in. You're not too small to start. Number 3, get mentors. I cannot stress this enough; a great mentor is worth its weight in gold.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Stay true to the grind. If you really want it, you'll work for it. After you get it, never stop fighting to make it better. Never rest on your laurels; there is always another level.
