Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Yamiek Anthony, Founder of Rockstar Career Moms, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm the founder of Rockstar Career Moms. I support and empower working moms to create working moms lives they love. I'm a career coach turned entrepreneur. When I became a working mom, I struggled to find my balance juggling a career I loved and caring for my babies. My struggles and desire to find a better way to balance work and being a mom led to Rockstar Career Moms. I now use my experience as a career coach to support working moms to create working moms lives they love.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in the career coaching industry for more than 15 years, and I love my career. It fulfills me to help people achieve their career and life goals. About five years ago, my family and I moved from the Washington, D.C., area to the Chicagoland area. I knew I needed to make a career change and tried to find a job that would enable me to continue my career coaching work and have time and flexibility to care for my two young daughters how I wanted to. I decided to take a chance on myself and create the job I wanted by starting my own business using my experience.

I joined several moms' groups when I moved to Chicagoland and found that I was not alone in my frustrations and struggled with trying to balance life as a working mom. My heart broke reading and hearing the stories of working moms' struggles, and my passion for supporting working moms was ignited. My two little girls, my husband, and the women I support motivate me to do what I do. It shouldn't be this hard to have a career we love and a family. Working moms need more support. I want IT ALL (an amazing career and family), and I want to help other women that want that too.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The positive impact I'm making on working moms' lives.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Not having anyone that I have to be accountable. This is wonderful as an entrepreneur and working mom that needs flexibility; however, it's hard, especially when I started my business. It can be a lonely road. It was hard not having guidance or goals coming from a "boss" when I first transitioned from my traditional career. I have had to hire coaches and join business coaching programs and accountability groups with people that understand this entrepreneurial life. You need community.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Begin by discovering yourself first. Who are you in this season of your life, and who do you want to be? Invest in yourself and your business. Get the help you need personally and professionally. Fail Fast! Take care of your overall health and well-being. You have everything within you to be successful. It begins by taking care of yourself - your mental, physical, spiritual, and psychological health. Start where you need the most help now - take one step at a time.
