Making Better Athletes - Rock Fitness

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dallas Price, owner of Rock Fitness, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a coaching business that helps young athletes get stronger and faster, prevent or recover from injuries and maximize their performance. I work with athletes as young as nine up to varsity to get clear with their training programs, focused nutrition, lifestyle habits, and mental skills so they can play their sport at the level they want for as long as they want.

Tell us about yourself

As a young athlete, I started having pain around 19years old, and I didn't listen to my body. This resulted in me having to stop all sports and activities for 4years. I struggled with just walking some days. I became a trainer as a temporary job, but as I got stronger, my pain went away. I realized the power of strength training and how much it could help regain function and get someone back to what they loved. I returned to rugby at 28 and have been playing competitively ever since; I'm 41 now. I know that simple and basic training and exercises can reduce common injuries and disfunction that so many young athletes have. Not being able to do the thing you love is crushing, and I know I can help keep kids healthy and playing for longer.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I doubled my income in the pandemic because I hired a business coach and pivoted to create an entirely new program and service structure.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

If you don't have enough money to hire a team, you have to be willing to learn how to do everything from marketing, graphic design, web design, market research, copywriting... All on top of actually doing your craft.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Hire a business coach or do a business course. You know your craft. Trust your expertise in that. The hardest part is not doing what you do; it is knowing how to run a business to be able to do what you do.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Network! Don't look at other businesses as competition. Learn from them. Ask them how they do things. There's space for all of us. Get very clear on your ideal client. If you're chasing a broad market, your voice will get drowned out.
