Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kait Hill, CEO of Rock City Digital, located in Little Rock, AR, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Rock City Digital is a digital marketing agency focused on helping service-based businesses grow their brand by generating trust within their own communities and producing qualified leads so that small businesses continue to grow.
Tell us about yourself
I started Rock City Digital when I was 21 years old because I wanted to change how employees were treated. My theory was that if I could create a fun and safe work environment where people actually enjoyed what they did and who they worked with, then we could produce some really cool creative assets for our clients and give them a good experience while doing it too. Luckily, that worked! Having a team who really cares not only about their teammates but clients is what motivates me every day. I look around and see agencies with the age-old "churn and burn" style of employment, and I just want to prove to them that there's a different way that they could go about it while still being profitable!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our team gets nominated and wins awards every year, which is something I wasn't expecting when starting Rock City Digital. It's been cool to see how my business model is not only working for the people inside the company but that people outside of it recognize the value we bring to the market as well.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Stress. It's easy to get stressed out when things aren't going the way you expect them to. Finding some good stress management techniques has changed the game for me and, ultimately, my team too.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Entrepreneurship is self-mastery in disguise. You will confront parts of yourself that you didn't know existed, and it's important not to turn a blind eye to them. My top 3 tips would be to read books about self-development and business so that you can learn from other people's mistakes and become a better person, find a mentor who is in a place you want to be 5-10 years from now, and learn about finance. If you can do all 3 of these things and stay tenacious, you can build something great!
