Improving the Quality of Life - Rochenda Howard

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rochenda Howard, Owner of Physio Therapy Concepts; B.E.T. PhysioPilates, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

PhysioPilates – A rehabilitation solution that addresses biomechanical and muscle imbalances that can underlie many pain conditions. Most of my patients have chronic or recurring back, neck, shoulder, hip, or knee pain. I am a physiotherapist.

Tell us about yourself

I was first immersed in Pilates while living in Hong Kong 30 years ago, long before "Pilates" was a household name. While training with my mentor Julia Ellis I was blown away by this approach to movement problems in the professional dancers we were working with. Even though Physiotherapists are supposed to be 'movement and exercise specialists,' I recognised the huge gap in our application of therapeutic exercise and in our understanding of the integrated functioning of the body when producing movement.

I am motivated every day by my clinical work and the ability to assist my patient's bodies to heal themselves through 'exercise' and to witness obvious and permanent changes in my patient's quality of life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

  • 1993. Opening the first PhysioPilates Studio in Asia in Hong Kong. This ongoing facilitated development, research, and education in the BET PhysioPilates system.
  • 1996. The commitment to passing on the BET PhysioPilates system to other physiotherapists through the development and dissemination of an education programme and a structured course series.
  • 2006. Published the first high-quality research paper on Pilates and the successful treatment of low back pain.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Control of your time and passion!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in what you are doing and that it can make a difference in your clients' lives.
  2. Collaborate with people who know more than you in their area to help support your offerings.
