Beyond Boxing - Robin Visanuvimol
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robin Visanuvimol, Owner of Beyond Boxing, located in Burnaby, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Beyond Boxing is a boutique boxing and fitness studio that offers both group classes and personal training in an intimate, friendly, and non-threatening environment. Our customers include men, women, children, and seniors of all ages and abilities who come to us to get fit, learn something new, or train to box competitively.
Tell us about yourself
I have been boxing, first recreationally and then competitively, for the last 35 years. I started training/coaching others part-time back in 2006. At first, I was simply using public recreational centers to train clients one-on-one in the evenings after my day job. Then, after my client base and reputation grew, I would rent other fitness or boxing studios to run group classes a few times a week. After doing that part-time for about seven years, I decided to quit my day job to open my own studio full-time. I enjoy imparting knowledge of boxing techniques and tactics to clients and pushing and motivating them to be the best that they can be. I view my clients as not just business patrons but as friends and family.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I am happy and proud to have fostered and created a tight-knit community within our gym where our members are like one big, loving, and supportive family.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Owning a business can be very tough financially at times. Your income can greatly fluctuates from month to month. But it is all worthwhile overall - I am my own boss, make my own hours, and am in charge of my own career and financial destiny. Most importantly, having more free time to spend with my kids and family is infinitely priceless.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do something you really love and are passionate about. You don't want to get stuck doing something you don't like for the rest of your life!
- If possible, start small or part-time while still working on your day job. Once you have a good momentum going, you can gradually move to run your business full-time.
- Make sure you have enough cash in reserve. Your business will most probably not be successful (or even turn a profit) right away.
