Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chris Martinez, Founder of Robin Style Werks, located in Scottsdale, AZ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My company is Robin Style Werks. It's the brainchild of my decade-plus experience in building businesses. For 12 years, I've been an entrepreneur, perpetually leveling up my life in every aspect, and at this stage, what I love doing most is helping other entrepreneurs rise up - specifically those early in the game, stuck at a certain level, or struggling to build balance between business and personal.
Why entrepreneurs?
I do feel compelled to help everyone, it's a very satisfying aspect of my life, but for the entrepreneur, the stakes are so high. Going all in on yourself, cashing out your 401k, and pooling all savings (like I did) for a chance at success when the odds are massively stacked against you!? It's an immensely challenging path. I respect everyone who makes the walk, and it's an honor of mine to guide individuals through it.
I tend to attract a small percentage of side hustlers who are truly dedicated to legitimizing their business and scaling it into something special; however, my core audience consists of entrepreneurs around 1-5 years in the game. They are small business owners who refuse to settle for a mediocre life. They are deeply committed to doing the work necessary and becoming the person necessary to live an unconventional life filled with adventure and fulfillment.
Tell us about yourself
I was very unhappy living in my cubicle, working 40-hrs/a week with no end in sight. I wanted more from my life. I wanted to control my time fully and make enough money to never worry about bills again. I wanted to live free. I had to. So I started an apparel company (something I knew nothing about) in the Jiu-Jitsu space (something I loved). That was 12 years ago at the time of this writing. Since then, I've sold a business, failed at several, and now own three. It was a hard road, but along the way, I learned how much I loved teaching, helping, and mentoring those on the same path I had started long ago. Today, I directly manage two of those companies and am focusing everything else I've got on coaching entrepreneurs who need help cutting through the noise, connecting to resources they normally can't access, and maximizing fulfillment in life. It's not just about business; it's about total life domination. I am so passionate about this; it doesn't require motivation. I've been at it for ten years, and I feel like I'm just warming up.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My personal biggest accomplishment as a business owner was the day I realized I created a company out of thin air, and now it's a self-perpetuating machine providing me with an abundance of time and money.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
What people don't realize early on their entrepreneurial path is that to be actually happy, you must grow as an individual in your personal life. Self-development is more important than business development if your goal is to be genuinely happy and fulfilled (in addition to being financially wealthy).
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- TIME - Don't wait; start today and work on it every single day for the next five years straight and then take a vacation.
- MONEY - Reinvest profits into people, not things. Do not take any more money than is necessary - again for the next five years.
- GROWTH - Get a coach! Don't be like me and stumble through 10 years of business development when there are legit coaches out there ready and willing to help you steer your ship better. It doesn't have to be me, but find someone you resonate with and leverage their experience and wisdom into your success.
