Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robert London, Founder of Robert London Photography, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a full-time commercial photographer, working both directly with consumers and with advertising agencies and media.

Tell us about yourself

I have always loved science but also art. With photography, I have to deal with how to make the light beautiful yet also have the light be color correct. With most of my work, I start with a blank sheet and create something amazing - it realizes a vision in one's mind that keeps us going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Well, I was handed nothing in my career. I had to move to NYC and find work with no connections or friends. When I first had an album cover produced and worked on a major worldwide advertising campaign, it was surreal.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Well, being a small business owner, you have to wear all the hats; my wife would say, "what are you doing today" well, let me go down the list, accounting, marketing, payroll, and taxes, and then try to do some actual income-producing work. Also, you never really have a day off; there is always something that needs to get done.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do not expect to just do good work, and more work will come. I know of so many people in various businesses that are not great at what they do but are great marketers.
  2. Reviews are everything these days, so give realistic time deadlines and finish the job early.
  3. Hire people who are more talented than you and pay them well.
