Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robert Buonaspina, Founder of Robert Buonaspina Productions, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a composer, arranger, Music Director, and multi-instrumentalist based in New York City. My projects range from a week to week, month to month— but, fortunately, they mostly all fit within the same framework of music creation and production.

Tell us about yourself

I started my music world at three years old, with my mother as my first piano teacher. I started violin lessons at seven years old, switched to viola at a later age, and the rest is history. What motivates me every day to devote my life to music is the fact that it constitutes a very autonomic part of my DNA necessary to my function as a human-like breather.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've been fortunate to work with a lot of well-credentialed musicians over the past few years since I concluded my Master's studies. I try not to leverage projects on metrics of success — any endeavor of any size is a worthwhile pursuit for me as a full-time musician. If it reaches even just one person in some small way, I consider it a nuanced and successful operation.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the most difficult challenges I've found has been that in certain situations, I've had to convince my clientele of the inherent value of their investment before they understand to make it. If this sort of investment in music (i.e., funding a larger concert or purchasing a more-expensive, well-maintained instrument/system) is not immediately obvious, it is hard to embark on a shared mission of changing the world through the communal music we create.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Remind yourself, consistently, of what brings you to love what you do.
  2. Consistently and consciously reject social infrastructures/politics from your artistic process.
  3. To commit yourself to nurture, whether through education or example, those who wish to learn from you.
