Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rob Ladely, Owner and Creator of The Amazing Gripper Playing Card Holders, located in Bremerton, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I create many styles of unique playing card holders. Some are specific for certain card games, while others will work for just any card game. Retired folks with hand issues which cannot hold their cards anymore have been delighted with my Hand-Aid style, which holds itself to their hand.

Tell us about yourself

After retiring, my wife and I took up playing cards, where I discovered that most players were having problems holding their cards. Since I like to keep myself busy, I set out to rectify that problem. Once I perfected my product, I made many card players very happy using my unique card holders!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd have to say my biggest accomplishment was when I designed what I call my "Hand-Aid" card holder, which incorporates an elastic strap allowing it to hold onto the player's hand. I've had many compliments from players who tell me they can now play cards again.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, the hardest thing is finding the time to keep my inventory up, as this is really just a hobby of mine. I do this to keep me busy and young in my retirement years.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The number one thing one should strive for is a unique product. There are many entrepreneurs out there vying for the same customer.
  2. Hook up with a good online site like Etsy or Goimagine.
  3. Don't get discouraged, as it may take a while for your product to be discovered.
