Everything You Need to Workout at the Airport - ROAM Fitness
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tyler Manegold, founder of ROAM Fitness, located in Eugene, OR, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Wasting time in the airport, suffering through cramped flights, and only being able to choose between unhealthy food options, overpriced alcohol, or browsing unwanted trinkets leaves passengers feeling unhealthy, unproductive, and frustrated with the status quo.
That's where ROAM Fitness® Airport Gym and Wellness Centers come into play. Our tech-enabled workout equipment, modern facilities, and premium customer service allow passengers and flight crews to remain connected to their busy lives while focusing on their bodies so they can board their next flight feeling happy, healthy, and revitalized. In a post-COVID world focused on safety, cleanliness, and hygiene, ROAM's diverse lineup of wellness merchandise, health-conscious snacks, COVID testing kits, sparkling clean showers, and individual sleeping rooms deliver exactly what tomorrow's passenger wants– a truly enjoyable experience that does not compromise safety or quality.
After years of in-airport experience, our fine-tuned business model and polished offerings will help your airport usher in the new normal. We believe travel days don't have to compromise your health, no matter who you are or how you travel.
Tell us about yourself
We started ROAM because we, our founding team, wanted it ourselves. We are our target market, and we were sick of the status quo of deep-fried food, overpriced alcohol, and sugary coffee. We get up and slug through the challenges of fighting in the industrial complex that is the airport environment because we continually get positive feedback and request for more locations from our users, who are also fed up with the lack of healthy outlets in the airport terminal experience.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Somehow staying alive (business-wise, doors open) after six years of operation, including two of which were during a pandemic shutdown that obliterated gyms....and airports.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Finding the right balance of the grind and hustle with a sustainable, long-term work ethic and mindset. Being an entrepreneur has to come with long nights and "sprints," but it's also about the long game and having a "marathon" mentality.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Vice sells. Confusion sells. Complexity sells. Straightforwardness seems so simple and clear to everyone that there must be some reason someone hasn't done it already. Clearly, this isn't true, but you need to know your audience in order to sell them on today's mission and objective.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Be sure you have a great support system for the emotional rollercoaster. Lots of times, you will question yourself and reality. It's like that ending scene in Inception, where he needs to spin the top to determine if he's crazy or not. You need something like that top, a charm of your own, that you can objectively look at and remind yourself that what you're doing is not crazy but, in fact, well worth the effort, struggle, and challenge.
