What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a photographer of the old and unused, such as old cars, abandoned buildings, and rusty machinery. My customers are those that can relate to my subjects and enjoy the stories that accompany them.
Tell us about yourself
I have always been interested in photography. When I started photographing the unusual subjects that I do, my wife and her mother both told me I should try to sell my work. I started small in local art and craft shows and now do bigger art shows. My photography is a way of preserving the objects I shoot, as they will not be around much longer. This motivates me to keep shooting and sharing.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment so far as a business owner is to have my work in several art galleries. This gives me a chance to interact with the public about my work in a way I cannot do at art shows.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about being a business owner is the interaction with the public and other business owners. Being an introvert makes this a challenge, but one I must overcome in order to succeed.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make sure your business idea is something you love to do. That way, you will not be working but getting paid to do what you love.
- Anything you don't want to learn about running a business, be prepared to hire out. You will become a Jack-of-all-trades, whether you like it or not.
- To grow a business, be prepared to take baby steps, and don't overextend yourself. Treat your customers like family.
