Homeschool and Humor - Richie Soares
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Richie Soares, Founder of Homeschool and Humor, located in Marshall, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Homeschool and Humor is an encouraging homeschool site where new and veteran homeschoolers can access homeschool resources, curriculum/books/games reviews, homeschool travel info, and mom life information. Throughout the site is a dash of humor to lighten your day merely through the writing style!
Tell us about yourself
I started working on my business because, at the time, there was very little information available for homeschool traveling. I researched and learned things the hard way about it, so I wanted to share what I learned with others in similar situations. Through that, it grew for more homeschool-focused material, such as curriculum reviews and resources. I have people reach out often with so many different questions about homeschooling, but all of them have one commonality: insecurity. Lack of confidence. Scared they're going to mess up their kids. So through my site, my resources, and the Homeschool & Humor Tribe community, I give them something to smile about through my winning personality along with tons of advice and encouragement. It means a lot to me to have moms feel more secure and confident in their homeschool, more than anything else. This is why I do what I do every day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I organized and hosted a huge homeschool mom summer summit from ideation to execution! About 4,000 homeschool moms registered, and so many heartfelt thank you's and grateful comments were received about it. The sales for the upgrade to the Lifetime VIP Pass were great, but it meant MORE to me that the homeschool moms found answers to their homeschool lifestyle within the summit of workshops and one-on-one access to me and 50 other homeschool mom bloggers and speakers. The attendees loved the summit, and they're already looking forward to the next one!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Knowing when to stop giving away items for free! I wish I could just give everything away for free, but unfortunately, it's my sole income, and I'm a single mom of three.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Do anyway, even if it's not perfect. Aim for B- work. You can always go back to tweak it later, but just get it out there right now. Done is better than perfect.
- Make your email list the #1 non-negotiable task to hone and build. These are your followers who like you and trust you, and want to know what YOU have to say, and it's your job to take care of them. This will be one of the greatest assets in your business, whether you realize it now or not. Set up your email list on the first day of your business!
- Learning is neverending. There are so many different aspects to a business and no way you're a know-it-all in every one of those areas. Take it very seriously to learn what you don't know, even if that's everything. Make a plan to focus on a skill every month to sharpen once you have the hang of the basics. Do not underestimate the power of knowledge when it comes to your business. This is the ONLY thing that will take you where you want to go in business. So seek what you need to learn and invest in yourself and your business, even if that means spending money, using up valuable time, getting a babysitter to read or do a course, etc. Make learning/personal development a high priority in your business, and never stop learning. You will never know it all.
