Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Richard Loebl, Founder of Relationship Center of South Florida, located in Boca Raton, FL, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Relationship Center of South Florida is a private psychotherapy practice specializing in relationship issues, couples therapy, marriage retreats, and intensives. We also specialize in working with women who struggle with life balance issues, depression, and anxiety and men who want to empower themselves for success at home and work.
Tell us about yourself
I've been a practicing therapist for many years. I got into therapy myself when I was 17 because of serious family problems. Therapy saved my life and motivated me to enter this field. I've also managed treatment and recovery programs in the past. When I moved to Florida from the D.C. area in the year 2000, I decided to open my own Center. I'm motivated every day by working with clients who teach me so much about resiliency and the possibility of change. I'm also motivated by working with and learning from other wonderful counselors, therapists, and psychiatrists.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is helping other people. There is a tremendous level of fulfillment in seeing clients and couples grow and change for the better. This, along with training and nurturing newer, younger therapists, brings meaning and purpose to my life. I'm also very proud of developing our unique program of couples therapy retreats and intensives called Connections. Lastly, I developed a specialized model for working with men who are late to develop emotionally and relationally, called The LATE Men (adult men who self-sabotage like Lost, Angry Teenagers).
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Financial management. I was trained as a psychotherapist - not as a businessman. I had no background in managing the financial burdens of a large monthly lease payment, staff payroll, and unexpected expenses.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Learn how to go with the flow. Take it one day at a time, prioritize the most important tasks, and remember that you can only do what you can do that day. Let the rest of it go and practice radical self-acceptance.
- Get support from others - family, friends, and business associates. Talk to them about your concerns, your stress, and your conflicts. Emotional support from others is crucial.
- Practice self-care daily and weekly. Mindfulness meditation, a balanced diet, regular exercise, and strong social connections are a must. Limit the use of alcohol and avoid recreational drugs.
