Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Richard Hill, Managing Editor at The Science of Psychotherapy Academy, located in Sydney, NSW, Australia.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide professional online learning content for the mental health community, many with Certificates of Education that can be used for membership organizations. We connect with the peak people in the field and also those who are rapidly rising. We provide video, and written content, professional courses, documentaries, and a monthly magazine read around the globe. We distribute our content between free access and membership access - all for a simple monthly membership.

Tell us about yourself

I work with business partner, Matthew Dahlitz, to produce what we proudly claim is the most diverse catalogue of learning material for therapists involved in mental health for a fraction of the cost of website academies that often hold fewer resources. We are both therapists, but I come from a background in the performing arts, and Matthew from film and television, which gives us an unparalleled edge in producing quality material that is both informative and a pleasure to engage with. Our work is both creatively satisfying and helping to advance the professional knowledge and capabilities of the most important profession in the world today - maintaining mental health.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We have passed several milestones that inspire us to keep going. We published our 100th Issue of The Science of Psychotherapy Magazine, which is produced monthly with expert authors from around the globe. And we recently passed the seemingly insurmountable goal of producing 1000 hours of learning content. Professionals can find almost anything that might interest them and complete both short courses of just an hour or two and longer programs.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For us, the most difficult thing is the constant creation of new and interesting content to keep our members excited about maintaining their membership. There are many sources of good education, but we pride ourselves on being among the very best.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Keep up with the technology! Things are developing every day, and audiences are shifting rapidly.
  2. Don't get overwhelmed and obsessed with keeping up with technological change. This may seem to counter tip 1, but there is a balance that needs to be found and maintained.
  3. Know all you can about what you teach, sell, make, etc., because the more you know, the more you are aware and sensitive to when things are the way they should be. You need to resonate.
