Ottawa Osteopathy & Sports Therapy - Richard Gregory

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Richard Gregory, Owner of Ottawa Osteopathy & Sports Therapy, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide effective manual therapy treatment for pain or imbalance related to work, sport, or injury. We focus on patient education, manual therapy, performance in sports, and exercise programming to treat and prevent injuries.

We cater to a wide variety of people, ranging from international-level high-performance athletes, weekend warriors, aspiring athletes, physically active people, individuals recovering from a minor or major injury/illness, and people who want to improve their overall health and ability to perform physical activity.

Tell us about yourself

I started this clinic because I believed that the standard model of care consisted of practical and specific manual therapy, personalized exercise programming, and patient/athlete education. This model of care wasn't available in a patient-centered clinic when I moved to Ottawa, so I decided to build the model from scratch.

My biggest motivation is knowing that all of my efforts and the efforts of our incredible team result in people living healthier, more physically active lives with less pain. Some of our work helps people win medals in sports, and some of our work helps people get out of bed without pain. It is all equally important. I'm also motivated to provide a rewarding and meaningful workplace for our talented staff.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment is, by far, the success in the retention of our staff. We have staff who have been with us since the first day we opened 14 years ago and many others who have been on the team for over a decade. I can honestly say they're both colleagues I respect and friends I enjoy hanging out with.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Like everyone else, we've dealt with a flood in our building and the COVID pandemic. It can be hard to know that you'll have to pivot, redefine workflows, and invest in the business during an emergency. You either buckle up and plot a course in bad weather or get washed away. Thankfully, a great team pulls together in the most challenging times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build your business in a field you are passionate about or, at the very least, very curious about.
  2. Find the right people to help you execute your business plan (this implies you've written a business plan).
  3. Follow the business plan. Measure, manage, and evolve it over time so your business remains current and relevant.
