Your Well-being is Our Success - Richard Bouzaglou
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Richard Bouzaglou, Owner of AMS Physiotherapy & Sports Medicine, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The AMS Clinic offers outpatient rehabilitation services. Our multi-disciplinary approach allows patients to benefit from medical, orthopedic, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, osteopathy, and psychology services all under one roof. Our patient population includes athletes, patients with joint pain, work accident victims, and motor vehicle accident victims.
Tell us about yourself
I started working as a physiotherapist in 1999. In 2002, I was the manager and director of a successful rehabilitation clinic in Montreal. After forging strong working relationships with a network of health professionals, I founded the AMS Medical and Rehabilitation Centre in 2008. Throughout my studies in sports medicine (at Concordia University) and physiotherapy (at McGill University), I developed a wide range of therapeutic approaches in Montréal.
In sports medicine, I worked with high-caliber athletes during my years as a head therapist in the fields of hockey, soccer, and soccer teams at CÉGEP Saint-Laurent. Wishing to further my training in the area, I then turned to the prestigious Department of Physiotherapy at McGill University, from which I graduated in 1999.
A fervent supporter of continuing education, I have taken (and continue to take) advanced courses in osteopathy, manual therapy, spine examination, and treatment, as well as several specialized spine treatment seminars, such as the McKenzie Method and the Mulligan Concept. I firmly believe that knowledge rhymes with learning, so I have also served as clinical residency director for physiotherapy students at Université de Montréal, McGill University, and CÉGEP Marie-Victorin.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have now opened three rehabilitation centers. One in Dorval, Montreal and Laval.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I try my best to offer a pleasant working environment for my employees. I invest time and money in their training. Unfortunately, not everyone is the right fit for the team. The hardest challenge is having to let an employee go.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make sure you are starting your business because you love what you do. Do not do it for money or fame. That will come naturally through the positive energy you will be spreading from doing what you love the most.
- Make sure you have a good accounting and legal team that you trust, and that can guide you properly.
- Don't try to do it all yourself. Delegate as much as possible so your contact with your patient stays close, allowing you to build real connections with your patients.
