Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rhonda Chamberlain, a Physiotherapist and Postpartum Fitness Coach, based in Cambridge, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a physiotherapist and a postpartum fitness coach. I help busy moms return to exercise with less pain and more strength. I provide 1:1 virtual physiotherapy and my signature online fitness program - Strong at Home Membership.
Tell us about yourself
I am an orthopedic physiotherapist, pre/postnatal fitness coach, and a mom to 2 girls. After a more challenging recovery with my 2nd daughter, I became obsessed with learning about all things core and pelvic floor. Even as a physiotherapist, I was SO lost with how to rehab my body postpartum. I can’t believe no one had taught me this information before!
Now I am on a mission to pay forward what I’ve learned. I don’t want other moms to say, “why didn’t anyone warn me?”. I love helping women realize how strong they really are. And encourage them to ditch the all-or-nothing mindset with exercise!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I started my business as a side hustle in 2020. In January 2022, I was generating enough income to quit my job and pursue my business full-time. As a mom of 2, I am very proud of myself for taking the leap into full-time business ownership!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The biggest challenge for me has been trying to maintain a balance between being a business owner and a mom. I love what I do and would find myself working when I didn't "need to." My family is my priority, so I have to be mindful to put work away on evenings and weekends.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Just get started. As a recovering perfectionist, the most important lesson I've learned is to just keep taking the next step. You won't know if it's the "right" step, and that's ok. Action breeds clarity. You can always change what you're doing down the road if you need to.
- Focus on your "why." You might look around and see a hundred people doing what you're doing (especially in the online space). Remember that your passion and purpose are what set you apart. Share your story. People will connect with you as a person, and that will be why they choose to work with YOU over someone else doing what you do.
- Trust and enjoy the process. It's tempting to focus solely on the end game - a certain number of clients, a certain amount of money, etc. But if you're not enjoying what you're doing in the meantime, it will make it harder to achieve those goals. Have fun, be patient, and remember why you started!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I love helping my clients ditch the all-or-nothing mindset with exercise. When we become moms, our definition of consistency may need to change. Remember that all movement counts. And the 10-minute workout you DID do is better than the 1-hour workout you DIDN'T do!
