What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business, Rhodes To Wellness Coaching, offers you clarity and purpose while you move forward and live a whole and fulfilling life. I work with trauma survivors as a peer, mentor, guide, and educator with the goal of helping my clients understand their recovery process and reconnect with themselves and the world around them.

Tell us about yourself

I, myself, am a multiple trauma survivor. My first major trauma happened when I was 11 years. I was involved in a head-on vehicle collision that took my mother's life. This changed the course of my life as I dealt with ongoing nightmares, a dysregulated nervous system, and undiagnosed PTSD. This trauma left me fearing the world around me. There was little support available to me, so as a teen, I developed anxiety and fell into depression. My biggest fear was being abandoned by anyone I loved. This led me to stay in some pretty dysfunctional relationships for way longer than I should have. Over time these relationships battered my self-esteem, and I found myself married to a man who abused me in every way possible while trying my best to raise our three children. In 2010, I left this marriage, barely the shell of the woman I was. In 2011, I was diagnosed with PTSD, and I started on medication and received therapy.

As I healed, I learned that 1 in 3 women would be in a domestic abuse relationship in their lifetime. I had had no idea that domestic abuse was so common. I set out to support others through a mentoring program, wanting no survivor ever to feel alone like I had. As I rebuilt myself, I knew I wanted to do more. I returned to school, got my Life Coaching Certificate, and spent the next 12 years studying trauma's effects on a person's body and mind earning various certificates. I am inspired daily by the survivors I have met and all that they have overcome.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Earning the trust of my clients.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is knowing that the success of the business is up to you. You won't get paid if you don't work on the business. And it's all about continually putting yourself out there.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Persevere through the good and bad days. Don't give up!
  2. Envision what you want to achieve in 5 years, 2 years, and the next month, then do it. Keep pushing through the ups and downs, and you will achieve your dream.
  3. Set daily, weekly, and monthly SMART goals. Make sure they are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound.
