Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in real estate but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Todd Ortscheid, President and CEO of Revolution Rental Management, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Revolution provides property management services to landlords of residential property. This means that we handle everything for them so that their real estate holdings can be truly passive investments, including rent collection, repairs, leasing, move-ins, move-outs, evictions, collections, etc. We also provide guarantees to our clients that our competitors do not, protecting clients from lost rent, property damage, and other risks. Our goal is to make being a real estate investor not only passive but extremely low-risk.
Tell us about yourself
Believe it or not, I actually started out as an airline pilot! I spent fourteen years at the airline, eventually leaving Southwest Airlines to focus on building my business. I purchased my first home when I was only 20 years old, and I later turned that property into a rental house, which started my interest in real estate. Since then, I have owned many more properties myself and managed many hundreds more for our clients.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think I'm most proud of the fact that I have branched out from just managing my own business and now do work on the side as a highly sought-after speaker and consultant in my industry. Knowing that my peers value my insights in this industry means a lot to me.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
My worst days are always when I have to make difficult decisions about team members who just aren't working out. We always want to provide long-term homes for our employees, and when that isn't possible, it's always a gut-wrenching decision.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Stick to something you know. Don't try to start a business in an industry that you don't already have a firm grasp of.
- Document everything you do, even when you're the only one doing it at first! Later on, when you're ready to start hiring employees to take on some of your work, you'll be glad that you documented all of the work that you do.
- Reputation is everything! Focus on building and maintaining your reputation from the very beginning. It's a lot harder to fix a bad reputation than it is to build a good one.
